An Editorial Opinion

Amazon co-founder MacKenzie Scott has given away billions of dollars to worthy causes.  Yet, she has not sought headlines for her generosity, nor buildings named in her honor.

Born in San Francisco 55 years ago and raised in an upper-middle class family, Scott studied under Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison at Princeton University, became an administrator at hedge fund D.E. Shaw, tried her hand as a novelist, and was married for 25 years to Jeff Bezos.  Together, Scott and Bezos co-founded Amazon and built it into a global online retail giant.

After their divorce in 2019, Scott became one of the world’s wealthiest women with $38 billion in Amazon stock. Today, her Amazon stock is worth $41.9 billion.

Unlike many multibillionaires, Scott signed the Giving Pledge, vowing to donate most of her wealth during her lifetime. She immediately began doing it at a speed and scale the world has never seen.

Uplifting Humanity in Positive and Profound Ways

Since 2019, Scott has donated more than $14 billion to over 1,600 organizations --faster than any philanthropist in history.  Her approach to philanthropy is defined by three guiding principles:

  • Give Big: Unrestricted multimillion-dollar gifts, often to small organizations.

  • Give Fast: No bureaucracy, no endless applications -- just action.

  • Trust Completely: No strings attached. No naming rights. No reports demanded.

Who is Benefitting from Scott’s Generosity?

Scott focuses on groups most often overlooked by philanthropic donors:

  • Community colleges and education programs for low-income students

  • Food banks and hunger relief efforts

  • Racial justice and equality initiatives

  • Women’s shelters and anti-domestic violence programs

  • Immigrant and refugee support organizations

  • HBCUs

Scott is Building a Lasting Legacy in Real-Time

Scott’s donations have changed millions of lives in positive ways:

  • Community colleges and HBCUs have expanded their scholarship programs.

  • Food bank s have doubled or tripled their storage and feeding capacity.

  • Racial justice groups have expanded their legal aid for marginalized communities.

Scott's giving not only saves lives -- it challenges how philanthropy works. While other multibillionaires chase attention, Scott stays out of the spotlight and allows the organizations to shine.

What Makes Scottt's Generosity Special?

Scott has no foundation -- just a small advisory team. Many groups only discover her support when they receive the check. She’s the first to give away so much, so fast, with zero self-promotion about the donor.

MacKenzie Scott proves that true power does not come from acquiring and holding wealth -- it comes from giving it away to worthy causes. Her quiet generosity is reshaping communities, rewriting the rules of philanthropy, and reminding the world what a real positive impact looks and feels like.
