My investigation into the nationally profiled 1975 police shooting of an innocent and unarmed Montgomery, Alabama resident named Bernard Whitehurst brought threats of bodily harm to my young children. For months, anonymous callers to my home threatened to throw acid in my children’s faces if I didn’t back off. The two children who were most at risk were Donald Watkins, Jr., and Light Watkins, who were almost 4 and 3, respectively. This article tells that story.

In August 1974, Carl and Shirley Hessell, a Black married couple, filed a $200,000 racial discrimination lawsuit in federal court against Charles Harris, Jr., and Mead and Charles, Inc., a Montgomery, Alabama real estate company after their application to rent an apartment at 2142 Madison Avenue, in Montgomery was rejected. The apartment was in the “White" part of town. This was my first Fair Housing Act case.

The effort to imprison Donald V. Watkins for his work in the landmark Bernard Whitehurst case was the first of many attempts by Alabama's White power structure to jail him for aggressively advancing and protecting the civil rights of Blacks in Alabama. Every landmark case Watkins handled during his legal career in Alabama was accompanied by a law enforcement effort to kill him, jail him, or harm his children.

Before each trial and between trials, prison guards savagely beat the Scottsboro Boys in the hope of getting a confession from one or more of them. They stripped them naked, made them lie on the floor, and beat them with a thick leather strap. On one occasion, Clarence Norris was beaten so severely he had to be hospitalized for his injuries. The Boys maintained their innocence throughout their ordeal. They took the beatings without breaking.

On April 29, 2026, in a 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court held that Louisiana's congressional map, which included a second majority-Black district, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. For all practical purposes, this ruling gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It also clears the way for “Jim Crow” to arise from the grave.

In 1986, Jefferson County, Alabama Circuit Court Judge Jack D. Carl passed a note to his law clerk during a hotly contested court hearing. The law clerk read the note, smirked, balled it up, and threw it in the trash can. During the lunch break, I retrieved Judge Carl’s note from the trash can. The note said, “I can’t stand this arrogant nigger,” referring to me. This article tells the story of what happened next.

On my digital media platforms, I always strive to feature and honor the true civil rights heroes who opened the doors of equal opportunity for historical victims of “cradle to the grave” racial, gender, age, and religious discrimination and not those who put new locks on these doors. Furthermore, I will never participate in any effort to reimage Alabama's drum major role in perpetuating ongoing "cradle to the grave" racial discrimination against its Black citizens.
