My father told me the story of the Scottsboro Boys when I was a young boy. I never forgot it. This was the case that motivated me to become a lawyer. My father was extremely proud that I was the attorney who cleared the names of Mr. Norris and the other eight Scottsboro Boys 45 years after their arrest. My father was ecstatic when I called and informed him that I had finally secured a full and unconditional pardon from the state of Alabama for Mr. Clarence Norris, the last known surviving "Scottsboro Boy." I told my dad I would bring Norris by his office immediately after we picked up the pardon. The Scottsboro Boys were a group of nine Black teenage boys who were arrested on March 25, 1931, and falsely charged with the rape of two white women aboard a freight train passing through Paint Rock, Alabama. All of them were innocent of the rape charges, but it did not matter to law enforcement authorities in Alabama. Clarence Norris (far left) and the other eight "Scottsboro Boys" were arrested in 1931 in Paint Rock, Alabama and falsely accused of raping two white women. As a young Black kid growing up in racially segregated Alabama during the 1950s, my dad made sure that my two brothers and I knew the story of the Scottsboro Boys, and knew it well. No Black parent in the South in the 1950s wanted to endure the traumatic and painful experience of having his/her son falsely accused of raping a White woman. The outcome of such a sexual assault accusation, whether true or not, was always ugly, violent, and fatal for the accused Black man, teenager, or child. Despite their innocence, the Scottsboro Boys were tried and convicted of rape. Eight of them were originally sentenced to death. The ninth Boy was a juvenile and was spared the death penalty. All of the Boys served significant time in prison. Clarence Norris’ request for a pardon followed a long, difficult, and turbulent legal battle that involved two U.S. Supreme Court-ordered retrials and a total of three death sentences handed down to him between 1933 and July 1937. Norris came within hours of being executed on two occasions, only to be spare death by the U.S. Supreme Court upon the issuance of last-minute stays of execution.. Alabama Gov. Bibb Graves eventually commuted Norris’ death sentence to life in prison, and in 1944 Norris was paroled. Norris violated the terms of his parole by fleeing Alabama after his release. After being told that he was a fugitive from justice and he would be treated leniently if he returned, Norris returned to Alabama. He was immediately imprisoned. Norris was paroled again in 1946, and he fled the state once again. Norris settled in New York, where he lived and worked in the city as a model citizen for the next four decades. Clarence Norris' Quest for a Full Pardon Based Upon a Showing of "Innocence" In the early 1970s, Clarence Norris, who was still classified by the state of Alabama as a fugitive, decided to pursue his pardon. In 1974, the NAACP in New York asked me to represented Norris in his quest for a pardon. This was one of my first cases as a lawyer. In addition to what my parents taught me about the case, I had studied the Scottsboro Boys' landmark cases in law school. I never thought one of the Boys was still alive. I was thrilled to be Clarence Norris' lawyer and honored to take his case. My 1974-75 attempts to secure a pardon for Norris were met with massive resistance from the Alabama Pardons and Paroles Board, and the case reached an impasse on several occasions. This resistance is documented in the case file linked here . In 1976, I reached out to my friend Milton C. Davis, who was a young lawyer in Attorney General Bill Baxley’s office at the time, and asked for his help. Davis and Baxley joined forces and worked diligently to help me secure Norris’ pardon. Attorney Milton C. Davis, a former Deputy Attorney General under Bill Bailey, worked tirelessly to secure a full and unconditional pardon for Mr. Clarence Norris. His work paid off on November 29, 1976. Clarence Norris' Triumphant Return to Montgomery On November 29, 1976, Clarence Norris returned to Montgomery to receive his pardon and a hero's welcome. I met him on the tarmac of the airport. Clarence Norris lands in Montgomery, Alabama on November 29, 1976, to receive his full and unconditional pardon from the state of Alabama. When Norris exited the airplane, we just stared at each other until he reached me in the sea of reporters and well-wishers. Then, we hugged and cried. Both of us realized the magnitude of the moment -- on this historic day, Norris had secured the first-ever full and unconditional pardon issued to a death-row inmate by the state of Alabama based upon a finding of “innocence”. We proceeded from the airport to the Pardons and Parole Board's hearing room. With tears streaming down his face, Norris proudly accepted his pardon on behalf of himself and the other eight Scottsboro Boys . His 45-year legal battle with the state of Alabama was finally over, and his name had been cleared (along with those of the other eight Boys). The state has finally admitted in writing that the Scottsboro Boys had been falsely accused of rape. I took Clarence Norris to visit my father after we had his pardon in hand. My father, who was president of Alabama State University at the time, was beaming with pride when Norris and I entered his office for a private meeting. My father had told me about the Boys' story when I was just a ten-year old kid. He followed their criminal trials in real-time. My father steadfastly supported my efforts to win a pardon for Clarence Norris. He also gave me great ideas on how to secure the pardon, including advice on how to win the approval of Governor George Wallace for the pardon. For an hour and a half, I watched Clarence Norris and my father share their stories and celebrate Norris’ full and complete freedom from the criminal charges that had haunted him for 45-years. My father thanked Clarence Norris for his courage and his years of perseverance in pursuing the pardon. Norris thanked my father for supporting me throughout the difficult legal battles to clear the Scottsboro Boys’ names. I took photographs of the historic meeting between these two giants among men -- Clarence Norris and Levi Watkins . Words cannot describe the respect these two men had for each other and for my work in securing Norris’ pardon. It was my father's pride in his son's achievement that I remember the most about that day. His pride was captured in my photographs of this event for posterity. The NAACP in New York, which had fought for justice for the Scottsboro Boys since 1931, was extremely pleased with the pardon for Clarence Norris. The organization sent its top executives to Montgomery to celebrate this monumental event in criminal justice. NAACP national officers, along with Donald V. Epilogue The Scottsboro Boys' ordeal began 93 years ago this month . This single case brought the greatest number of death threats on my life during my entire 46-year career as a lawyer. To this day, the Clarence Norris pardon has been the greatest and most rewarding fight in my legal career. I am proud that God chose me to win this fight for Clarence Norris (and the other Scottsboro Boys) while he was alive to smell the roses.

An Editorial Opnion Two seminal sources guide my search for the truth about Donald J. Trump’s sexual attitudes and conduct toward women and girls.  My extensive litigation experience in adjudicated cases (217 wins versus 8 losses) enables me to properly assess the content, credibility, and weight to be accorded to these sources (and many others), without regard to political spin by partisans, “for profit” media organizations, Internet trolls, and/or paid social media influencers.   The 2016 Access Hollywood Tape was a Voluntary Confession by Trump of His Predatory Sexual Behavior and Misconduct   My first seminal source is the 2016 Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump knowingly and voluntarily confessed his predatory sexual behavior to Billy Bush.  In his own words, Trump described how he sexually abuses women and girls:   “I did try and fuck her, she was married…. I moved on her like a bitch. I couldn't get there. And, she was married. Then all-of-a-sudden I see her, she's now got the big phony tits and everything. She's totally changed her look…. I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful... I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything…. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."   Entertainment Tonight show host Nancy O’Dell is the woman to whom Trump is referring when he says he “ moved on her ,” “ did try to fuck her ,” “ took her out furniture shopping ,” and now she has “ the big phony tits and everything .”  Of course, Trump was married to his third wife Melania when he stalked and sexually harassed O’Dell.  As a self-respecting show business professional, a devoted wife, and a loving mother, O’Dell rebuffed Trump’s predatory sexual advances.   The rest of Trump’s confession described how he cannot help himself when he is around “ beautiful women .” He is compelled to “ start kissing ” them, without their consent.  Because he is a self-proclaimed “ star ,” Trump said he can “ Grab them by the pussy. ” In fact, he “ can do anything ” to women and girls.   It is important to note that Billy Bush did not trick or coerce Trump into making this confession.  Trump gleefully bragged about his predatory sexual behavior and conquests.   The Michigan Journal of Gender and Law Article on Trump’s Sexual Misconduct   The second seminal source is an article written by Ruthann Robson and published in the Michigan Journal of Gender and Law (Vol. 27, Issue 1, 2020) titled, "The Sexual Misconduct of Donald J. Trump: Toward a Misogyny Report.”  Robson is a Professor of Law & University Distinguished Professor, City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law.  Robson's well-researched, 148-page article, is written primarily for trial lawyers, legal scholars, and law students.  It provides legal citations and footnotes for every material statement contained in the article.   [ Click here to read Robson’s entire article ]   Robson's article analyzes the objective facts and circumstances surrounding all litigated and unlitigated sexual misconduct claims against Donald Trump, as of 2020.  These claims start on page 104 with the allegations of sexual misconduct and defamation that were made in a lawsuit filed by Summer Zervos. From there, article covers:  Stormy Daniels and her defamation claim against Trump.  (Pages 110-114). Alva Johnson and the dismissive judge in her case. (Pages 114-116). Jill Harth Houraney. (Pages 116-117). Ivana Trump’s sworn and unretracted deposition testimony that Trump “raped” her. (Pages 117-119). The 20 women who did not filed lawsuits but have made their allegations public. (Pages 119-123). E. Jean Carroll. (Pages 123-124). Trump’s sexual attitude and encounters with young girls and underaged teens; his partying with Jeffrey Epstein; 13-year-old Katie Johnson’s sexual misconduct lawsuits against Trump, which she dropped after her life was threatened ; Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s 2015 defamation lawsuit against Trump, which was settled in 2017 for an undisclosed amount of money after a judge allowed Giuffre to conduct discovery in the case. (Pages 125-130).   The other portions of the article are insightful and helpful for lawyers who protect the rights of sexually abused women and girls in the legal arena.   The Predatory Sexual Misconduct Described by the Women and Girls Listed in Robson's Article Perfectly Matches Trump’s Confessed Sexually Abusive Behavior on the Access Hollywood Tape   As a former litigator, I compared the sexual misconduct described by the women and girls listed in Robson’s article with the predatory sexual behavior and conduct Trump described in his confession to Billy Bush.  It was a perfect match. Trump's predatory sexual misconduct occurred repeatedly over several decades. He engaged in a pattern and practice of sexual misconduct that was often covered up by "hush money" payments and Trump-friendly judges.   After Robson's article was published, E. Jean Carroll won her multimillion dollar sexual misconduct case against Trump. He is now an adjudicated sexual predator.   Today, Donald Trump is engulfed in the searing flames of Epstein’s child molestation, child rape, and child pornography case.  His Attorney General (Pam Bondi) and Department of Justice (DOJ) are doing everything within their power to suppress the truth and obstruct justice in Epstein's child sex trafficking ring. This presidentially-ordered DOJ coverup is ongoing. The only logical reason for this orchestrated coverup is to protect Trump from complicity in Epstein's criminal sex trafficking activities.   Finally, from a political standpoint, MAGA World does not seem to care if Donald Trump is an adjudicated sexual predator of women, or if Trump is a serial Epstein pedophile.  MAGA’s support of Trump appears to be unconditional. In their view, Trump “can do anything” he wants to women and girls.

An Editorial Opinion The collapse of Donald Trump’s MAGA Movement was predictable.  After assuming office in January, Trump appointed: (a) unqualified women to run the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice, (b) a politically-connected dummy as Secretary of Education, and (c) a washed-up, womanizing, drunkard as Secretary of Defense.  Trump's other Cabinet members are either mindless cheerleaders or professional grifters.  White House staffers like Stephen Miller and Karoline Leavitt are simply insane sychopants.   Early on, Trump thrilled his MAGA base by immediately and vigorously crushing DEI policies and initiatives that benefitted women and historically disadvantaged racial minorities. He also vilified and terrorized America's tiny transgender community. Additionally, Trump rounded up and deported 527,000 migrants of color, whether they were in the U.S. legally, or not. These Blitzkrieg actions were "red meat" for Trump's MAGA base, which cheers wildly whenever somebody who is disfavored by Trump, or them, is subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment.   Then came the foreign wars, the arbitrary and caprious tariffs, the endless court battles, a massive DOJ coverup in Jeffrey Epstein's child sex trafficking case, an ongoing law enforcement coverup in Charlie Kirk's assassination case, DOJ’s retribution against Trump’s perceived political enemies, and Trump’s health issues (which are far worse than what the White House has publicly acknowledged).  None of these matters has gone well for Trump. MAGA-Aligned Billionaires and Grifters are Living Large   Eleven months into Trump's second term, MAGA voters now realize that the easy victories in the culture wars did nothing to lift them out of their dire financial straits. In fact, while Trump is building a $300 million ballroom for White House parties and dinners, MAGA voters (and other Americans) are drowning from the increased cost of housing, healthcare, gas, utilities, insurance, prescription drugs, groceries, and childcare.  Millions of Trump supporters are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.   In contrast, Trump’s circle of MAGA billionaires are living it up with gigantic tax breaks, humongous government contracts, lavish weddings, and over-the-top theme parties at Mar-a-Lago.  What is more, First Buddy Elon Musk just got a whopping $1 trillion salary package for serving as the CEO of Tesla.    Trump voters have finally realized that they installed a government of the rich for the super-rich.  Every top official in the Trump administration is grifting at taxpayer's expense.  For exampe, FBI Director, Kash Patel, is using the Bureau’s $60 million private jet to romance his 28-year-old gold-digging girlfriend, whom federal agents guard at taxpayers' expense.  Kristi Noem and her married boyfriend (Corey Lewandowski) are busy romancing each other and enriching themselves by funneling $200 million DHS contracts to private firms tied to them.  Trump’s family members are getting richer by cutting private business deals with foreign heads of state and business leaders who visit Trump at the White House.   Rank and file MAGA voters get nothing from Trump but “feel good” campaign rally speeches and political theater.  This is why Trump’s approval rating is in the toilet today.  The MAGA Movement has finally run out of steam. Old MAGA Friends Betrayed, as New Friends Enrich the Trump Family   Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), who forced Trump’s hand on the Epstein files, announced Friday that she is resigning from Congress (effective January 5, 2026). Like many of Trump's old friends in the MAGA Movement, Greene finally realized that Donald Trump’s loyalty extents only to himself and that everybody else in his political world is expendable.     Trump’s newest friends are: (a) Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa (a former terrorist leader who killed Americans), (b) Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (a mass murderer who killed Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, dismembered his body, and dissolved his body parts in acid), (c) Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani (whose nation is a state-sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East), and (d) incoming New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (a socialist Democrat and Muslim American).  These men now join: (a) Russia’s Vladimir Putin (a mass murderer and declared war criminal), (b) North Korea’s Kim Jong Un (a butcher of his own people), (c) El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele (a Central America con artist and crook), and (d) Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu (a declared war criminal and fugitive from ICC justice) as Trump’s most admired circle of geo-pollical leaders and friends.   MAGA’s America First agenda is over.  It has been replaced by a selfish, greedy, Trump First agenda that delights the President while he basks in the throes of dictators, terrorists, war criminals, and Banana Republic crooks.  Meanwhile, Trump’s MAGA voters need to start looking for bankruptcy lawyers. They have definitely been hoodwinked and betrayed.

Today, he called porn actress Stormy Daniels, “Horseface”. He laughed approvingly while Howard Stern described his daughter Ivanka as a “voluptuous”, “piece of ass.” He brags about grabbing women “by the pussy.” (His words, not mine). He criticizes the “low” IQ of some African-American women. His “terrific guy” friend Kanye West was allowed to use the word “motherfucker” in the Oval Office during a highly promoted and planned visit. No man or woman in a position of authority in government or political leadership in his Republican Party has stepped toward to check his misogynist attitude and language toward women. They mask their cowardice in this regard by claiming his political agenda is too important to become distracted by his obvious lack of respect for women. Yet, these cowards ask American citizens to respect the Office of President of the United States. Why should ordinary citizens respect the Office of President when the man who occupies it does not? Nobody ever answers this burning question. The man we are talking about is Donald J. Trump, America’s 45th president and the so-called “leader” of the free world. Unfortunately, this man is shaping how men in America and around the world will view women in this “very scary time” for young men in the #MeToo era. The clear message he is sending is this: It is okay for men to bully and degrade women during the era of Trump. He has their backs.

Watkins. “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” is a DreamWorks animated movie that follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion as he journeys through the untamed American frontier. Encountering man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave. The courageous young stallion also finds love with a beautiful paint mare named Rain on his way to becoming one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Old West. Movie Poster for “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.” The movie was released on May 24, 2002 and has made more than $122.6 million at the box-office. The featured song is, "Here I Am." My daughter Claudia R. Watkins was 7 years old when Spirit hit the theaters. We bought the video of this movie as soon as it became available. Claudia and I watched this movie dozens of times. I wanted her to fully understand that we lived in a world where the free spirit of good people was often broken like the domesticated horses in the movie. I preached to Claudia how extremely important it was that she never allowed anyone to break her free spirit. I repeated this message every time we watched Spirit. I even nicknamed her "Spirit" to reinforce this message. By the time Claudia was 12, I could tell she understood the importance of maintaining and enjoying her free spirit. I told Claudia to never change who she was just so people would like her. If she stayed true to herself, the right people would love her. I am proud to say that Claudia and her four brothers have an unbroken free spirit today, as do their mothers and father. This state of being makes the trip through life an enjoyable experience, even when it is raining and storming in our lives. Without rain, nothing grows. This is why we must learn to embrace the storms in life and navigate a course around or through them. Today, Claudia lives and works as an executive for a multinational company in London. Claudia accompanied me on a business trip to London when she was 13 years old and she fell in love with the city. At this stage in her life, Claudia is Eurocentric in her personal space and global in her worldview. I highly recommend that my readers who have young daughters watch “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.” It may make a big difference in how you view your life, and theirs.

Confidential sources within the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) have confirmed that Maxwell is scheduled to leave Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas on or about November 20, 2025, to begin a 30-day furlough to home that will be issued by Warden Dr. Tanisha Hall.  Dr. Tanisha Hall, Warden of Federal Prison Camp Bryan. Maxwell will remain free, via a continuous series of 30-day furloughs, while she petitions President Donald Trump for clemency, which he has promised to grant.   Reportedly, Maxwell’s was promised her freedom as part of a deal by Trump’s Department of Justice to keep Trump’s name out of Maxwell's mouth during the growing Epstein scandal in Washington.  Maxwell has honored her end of the deal.   After a July meeting with Todd Blanche -- Trump’s personal attorney and current Deputy Attorney General -- Maxwell was swiftly moved from a federal prison to an out-custody prison camp.  Under BOP regulations, Maxwell was not eligible to serve her time in a prison camp. Without explanation, that ban was removed for Maxwell.   Once Maxwell arrived in the camp, Dr. Tanisha Hall and her staff showered Maxwell with special treatment. Whatever Maxwell wanted, she got.  Specially prepared meals.  Manicures and pedicures.  Personalized laundry service. Special phone privileges and computer access. New uniforms, sheets, and bedding.  A cushy no-show job.  Maxwell is even chauffeured around the camp grounds by staff and inmate drivers.   Acting on directions from BOP officials in Washington who report directly to Blanche, Dr. Hall has transmogrified herself from a prison warden into an executive assistant to Maxwell. Staff members at Camp Bryan realize that Maxwell is untouchable, and they act accordingly.   Once she is home, Maxwell will not be required to register as a "sex offender" in her community because, technically speaking, she will still be in BOP custody. As part of the deal, Trump also promised to grant Maxwell clemency before the end of the year. Due to the firestorm of Epstein controvery in Washington right now, Trump may wait until the Spring to free Maxwell. No convicted child sex trafficker in U.S. history has ever been afforded this kind of special treatment in prison. This is the new MAGA standard of prison comfort for Trump-embraced pedophiles. Watkins Copyrighted and Published on November 13, 2025 An Editorial Opinion Once upon a time, Black Americans in the Greenwood community of Tulsa, Oklahoma built a self-contained and self-reliant community that thrived on the fundamental business principle that blacks could pool their money, network with each other, and create an epicenter of African American commerce and culture.  This community was called “Black Wall Street” and it flourished until a mob of angry white Tulsa residents burned it to the ground in 1921. Blacks in Greenwood achieved what Jewish, Greek, Italian, Irish, Russian-Americans, and other immigrant communities accomplished in the United States –-prosperity for its citizens through the economic support of its members.   As a result of networking among black residents and businesses, Greenwood had luxury shops, restaurants, grocery stores, upscale hotels, jewelry and clothing stores, movie theaters, a library, newspaper (the "Tulsa Star"), an entertainment district, doctors, dentists, and law offices, its own highly rated school system, a post office, a savings and loan bank, a hospital, reliable transportation services, and six private airplanes. This community, which was founded in 1906, blossomed as a center for economic empowerment.  It soon became a driver of black commerce throughout America.   This remarkable feat was accomplished because the dollar changed hands in Greenwood 19 times before it left the community.   Today, the dollar changes hands in the black community only once before it goes on to enrich white merchants and business owners who use it to reinvest in their communities and institutions.  What is more, black-owned businesses today have virtually no access to capital on Wall Street or at local banks beyond what is needed for car loans and home mortgages in redlined neighborhoods.  Additionally, in the golden age of Trumpism, there is zero enforcement of anti-racial discrimination laws in commercial or consumer lending. Showcasing Blacks Influencers on White-Owned Business Platforms   The handful of blacks who are prominently featured in today's mainstream media are carefully selected, groomed, and yoked within business relationships with white-owned companies where they are designated as “brand ambassadors,” or “minority partners,” or "senior management executives" who have little to no formal business training, nor real voice in business operations. Their primary function is to inject the needle of commerce into the economic veins of the black community to facilitate the flow of dollars out of the community and into the coffers of the same corporations that make these communities beg for philanthropic dollars.   Since the passage of the Voting Rights Acts in 1965, five or more generations of black mayors have populated the landscape in America’s urban cities.  Yet, none of them has recreated a modern version of "Black Wall Street" in his/her city.  Most of these mayors have been conditioned to brag about their success in building empowerment opportunities for white-owned businesses within the cities they govern.   Only one of them -- Montgomery, Alabama Mayor Steven Reed -- has even tried to recreate a modern and upgraded version of "Black Wall Street"in his city.  To Mayor Reed’s shock and dismay, two black Montgomery Personnel Board members -- John Baker and Jacqueline Crawford -- aligned with the lone white Board member -- James R. (Spud) Seale -- to effectively killed Reed's economic empowerment initiative last month.  As a group, the Board is apparently beholden to the local " Cradle of the Confederacy " white power structure in this predominantly black " Heart of Dixie " city. Filling the Void   In the absence of government leadership, a group of 36 top international entrepreneurs of color have joined forces to recreate the spirit and progress of "Black Wall Street" by networking with each other.  Their brilliance, business acumen, innovation, and substantial achievements in diverse businesses are impressive by any objective measure of success.  Miami-based multimedia mogul Robert Alexander is a example of this brilliance and forward-thinking approach to business. His company, 360WiSE, is an industry leader. Alexander is known for innovation and technological achievements in the global multimedia business sector and he is highly respected around the world for his business achievements. Robert Alexander , owner and CEO of 360WiSE, addressed the World Summit Assemble at the 2020 World Peace Media Conference in Seoul, Korea. This event was a gathering of 6,000 global leaders from over 170 nations, including heads of state, diplomats, journalists, and peace advocates. Google’s new AI Overview has officially recognized 360WiSE® as a major player in the AI-powered media and marketing space , citing the company's proprietary AI Authority Stack™, OTT Network , and strategic partnerships within this network of successful black-owned international businesses as key components of 360WiSE's growth infrastructure. The businesses within this growing network engage in international commerce.  Many have formed strategic business alliances with leading, successful, seasoned, and well-capitalized African, Indian, and European entrepreneurs.  Every member of this network realizes the limitations of operating within the constraints of the outdated "silo" business mindset called “rugged individualism.”   None of these entrepreneurs is wasting time gossiping about people’s private lives, or bragging about flashy material things, or wallowing in non-consequential social events.    All of them would like to locate a U.S. corporate headquarters in the same American city to form a modern and upgraded version of "Black Wall Street."  They do not seek or need local government funding or local government contracts to support their thriving international business operations.    None of these businesses has been recruited to a specific American city, as is often done by mayors to attract white-owned businesses to their municipalities.   With no government-led initiative to recreate, modernize, and upgrade the spirit and economic progress of "Black Wall Street," the private sector has stepped up to fill this void by creating its own version of "Black Wall Street" with participating businesses in the international stream of commerce.  By doing so, they are standing on the shoulders of those business giants who built the original "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa.

Watkins Copyrighted and Published on March 23, 2025 Mary Griffin Auburtin, 1974 An Editorial Opinion I have often told the story about the early years of my legal career when many judges and court clerks in Alabama addressed me in open court as the “nigger lawyer from Montgomery,” rather than “Mr. Watkins” or “Counselor.”  This dehumanizing experience happened to me quite often in the 1970s, particularly in small, rural counties where everybody working in the courthouse was white (except for the janitors and maids).   Now is the time to share stories on the flip side of that coin. I will start with the remarkable story of Mary Griffin Auburtin of Marion, Alabama .   Unexpected Decency in the Perry County Court Clerk's Office   When we met, Mary Griffin Auburtin was the Circuit Court Clerk for Perry County, Alabama, which is located in state’s Black Belt region.  At the time, I was a part-time, Montgomery-based city attorney for Uniontown, Alabama. The year was 1974.   Upon entering the Clerk’s office for the first time, I expected the usual demeaning, disrespectful, and unhelpful conduct in filing my court papers.  I was also prepared for the usual racial insults.  None of that happened.   The person who helped me that day was Mary Griffin Auburtin.  She was a 50-year-old white woman who was cheerful, friendly, professional, and very helpful.  She introduced me to her small office staff and all of them were warm and friendly, as well. Auburtin handled my filings and then gave me a tour of the courthouse.  Inside the courtroom, Auburtin took the time to give me a private profile on each one of the judges in her judicial circuit.   Auburtin called me “Mr. Watkins” the entire time, even though I was half her age. I called her “Ms. Auburtin.”  She also told me to call her if I ever needed any information or help with my cases. Her offer was sincere and deeply appreciated.   When I left the courthouse, I was overwhelmed by Mary Griffin Auburtin’s kindness and respect for my humanity, which was a rare experience for black lawyers in Alabama courthouses during the 1970s.  Over the years, the mutual respect Auburtin and I had for each other grew.   Auburtin, who had been the Circuit Court Clerk since 1963, handled all administrative matters for the traveling judges in the Perry County Division of her judicial circuit.  She scheduled jury and non-jury trials, set hearings on motions, and readied orders for the judges’ signatures. She was super-smart, extremely professional, and business savvy.   Auburtin’s father, J.C. Griffin, had been elected Sheriff of Perry County three times and served as Probate Judge twice.     Auburtin’s Commitment to Judicial Fairness   From our first meeting in 1974 until her retirement in 1989, Auburtin discharged her Clerk’s duties in a fashion that minimized my exposure to the most racist judge in her judicial circuit, whom she despised.  She also explained to me how local white lawyers would bribe a particular judge by deliberately allowing him to win every round of their weekly poker games at the local country club during the weekends before the scheduled docket call on the following Monday.     Auburtin did what she could to shield me from the adverse effects of these two negative factors when she scheduled my court cases, motion hearings, and trials. With Auburtin leveling the playing field, I was able to use my trial skills to win all 36 of my cases in the Perry County Circuit Court during my 21 years in that court system. Auburtin's fairness as a court clerk contributed significantly to my 217-8 overall win-loss record in trials during my 46-year legal career.   By October 1985, Auburtin’s Clerk’s office was known throughout the state for its “neighborly” and efficient services. She was featured in Alabama Court News for this citizen-friendly achievement.   A Warrior for the Equal Rights Amendment   Over the course of our professional friendship, I learned that Mary Griffin Auburtin was a social justice warrior. In the 1970s, she campaigned in Alabama and around the nation for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). She also worked hard to advance the fair administration of justice for all litigants in her courthouse. Auburtin described her advocacy work for women’s equality in an insightful November 21, 1977 interview for the 1977 International Women’s Year Oral History Collection .   Mary Griffin Auburtin first became interested in women’s issues in 1965. Auburtin served as a president of her local chapter of the Alabama Federation of Business and Professional Women Clubs.  She was also president of the Alabama Coalition of Citizens for ERA. By 1977, Auburtin was Legislative Chairwoman for the National Federation of Business and Professional Women Clubs. Epilogue   Mary Griffin Auburtin was a kind, caring, civic-minded, and wonderful human being. I will never forget how Auburtin made me feel when she looked me in the eyes, called me “Mr. Watkins,” and shook my hand the first time we met.  With those simple gestures, Auburtin willingly and cheerfully embraced my humanity.   Throughout our time together, Mary Griffin Auburtin did everything within her power as a court clerk and decent human being to block for me on the playing field of life, while asking for nothing in return.  She had courage when courage counted. She was one of the great ones!   Mary Griffin Auburtin died on April 17, 2013, at Southland Nursing Home in Marion, Alabama at the age of 88.  To this day, I strive to live my life in a way that makes her proud.

An Editorial Opinion   On August 1, 2015, two weeks after Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency, I published an article titled, “ Donald Trump’s Newest Art of the Deal – Winning the American Presidency . ”  In the article, I predicted that Trump would win the presidency in 2016 and explained why.   On March 20, 2020, I predicted Trump's defeat in 2020 , which was caused solely by his mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.    On October 31, 2021 , I published an article titled, “ Will Trump Win the Presidency in 2024? ”  In the article, I predicted that Trump would win the presidency in 2024 and explained why.   Today, I am predicting that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Gerogia) will likely become the Republican nominee for president in 2028 and will likely become the next president of the United States. This article explains why. Greene Has Broken Away from Donald Trump's Unpopular MAGA Agenda   Greene has broken away from Donald Trump’s increasingly unpopular MAGA agenda without trashing Trump.  After 5 years in Congress, Greene has emerged as a respected national leader on many major domestic and international policy issues. Greene has successfully transitioned from a run-of-the-mill cheerleader in MAGA’s cultural wars to a leading voice of reason on domestic and international issues that are most important to ordinary Americans.   Greene makes Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio -- her likely GOP opponents in 2028 -- look like used-up Trump “comfort girls.”  As was the case with Kamala Harris and Joe Biden in 2024, neither Vance, nor Rubio, is free to distance himself from Trump’s increasingly unpopular political agenda and antics.   Why is Greene’s Star Rising So Rapidly in the National Political Arena?   Marjorie Taylor Greene's star is rising on the national political scene today because she is right on so many issues that matter to ordinary Americans of all political stripes.  Greene has found Middle-America and she is leading it without fear, hesitation, or reservation.   Greene is right about the Jeffrey Epstein files and the government’s mistreatment of the sexual abuse victims in Epstein’s case.   Greene is right about America’s toxic relationship with AIPAC and Israel, as well as their dictatorial grip on Congress and the U.S. Presidency.   Greene is right about genocide in Gaza and Jewish attacks on innocent Christians in Israel.   Greene is right about American tax dollars providing a quality of life for Israelis that is far superior to what Americans experience at home.   Greene is right about the GOP’s treatment of women as second-class citizens.   Greene is right about the government’s role in making healthcare affordable to working class Americans.   Greene is right about the government’s role in making housing affordable to all Americans, especially first-time home buyers.   Greene is right about the existence of government and private sector weather modification programs that are causing hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in property damage around the nation each year.   Greene is right about America’s propensity to engage in foreign wars against any perceived “enemy” designated by Israel.   Greene is one of the few members of Congress who acts based upon personal principles, as opposed to campaign contributions.  This is so refreshing to tens of millions of American voters.    Americans are Sick and Tired of Donald Trump and Trumpism   As every recent national poll has shown, more than 60% of Americans are sick and tired of Donald Trump and the choas that comes with him. Today, Trump and his presidential policies are as attractive as spoiled meat.   Americans are sick and tired of Trump's narcissism, racism, sexism, xenophobia, callousness, and cruelty.  They are sick and tired of Trump’s nonstop lying about everything.  They are sick and tired of Trump’s lawlessness.   They are sick and tired of how Trump and his multibillionaire friends are raping the government for every perk and financial benefit they can find or manufacture.  They are sick and tired of the Trump family’s nonstop, mega-scale, grifting at taxpayer’s expense.     They are sick and tired of Trump’s suffocating grip on Congress.  They are sick and tired of Trump’s weak-kneed, corrupt, and politically motivated sycophants on the U.S. Supreme Court.     They are sick and tired of Trump's military intervention in every place that benefits his family's and friends' financial interests.   They are sick and tired of Trump’s coverup in the Jeffrey Epstein child molestation, child rape, and child pornography case. They are sick and tired of his coverup in Charlie Kirk’s assassination case.   They are sick and tired of Trump bullying America’s traditional allies, while sucking up to her enemies.  They are sick and tired of being Israel’s “sugar daddy” and sponsoring its perpetual welfare state.   They are sick and tired of Trump’s nonsensical, impulsive, and embarrassing antics every day. They are sick and tired of Trump’s name, image, and likeness on everything.   Within this context, Marjorie Taylor Green has emerged as an attractive candidate for conservative Democrats, conservative to moderate Republicans, and free-thinking independent voters.   She is filling the void for centrist leadership in the national political arena.   Unless the Democrat Party can offer voters a young, passionate, independent-thinking, energetic, centrist presidential nominee who is free of Israel's and AIPAC’s stranglehold, Marjorie Taylor Greene will likely become the 48 th President of the United States.

Turner Memorial Fund at LeMoyne-Owen College is named for the high school and college teacher in Memphis, Tennessee who launched Dr. Annie Marie Watkins Garraway, Ph.D., towards a successful career as a mathematician. This scholarship fund was established by Dr. Garraway in 2018. Dr. Garraway is my oldest sister. She is also the oldest child of our parents, Dr. Levi Watkins, Sr., and Ms. Lillian Bernice Watkins. Inside of our family, we call Dr. Garraway, "Marie." Marie has been one of my role models since early childhood. She has always inspired and motivated me to pursue educational excellence and to climb the highest mountains in business. I admire and respect her so much. Marie always reminds my siblings and me that we can never be silent about the things that matter in life. The inspirational story of the math teacher in Memphis and her young student at Owen Junior College is featured in a July 2, 2018 article in the Tri-State Defender newspaper titled, “ ’Hidden Figures’ moves LOC alum to endow math scholarship. ” It also appears in a July 5, 2018 article in the Commercial Appeal newspaper titled, “' Hidden Figures' leads to math scholarship for LeMoyne-Owen College students. ” Juanita R. Turner Epitomized Educational Excellence The “Hidden Figures” novel and movie made Marie think fondly about Ms. Juanita R. Turner. Ms. Turner was Marie's math teacher during her freshman year at Owen in 1957-58. Our father, Dr. Levi Watkins Sr., was Owen’s first president. In 1968, Owen merged with LeMoyne College. Ms. Turner taught math full-time at Manassas High School, while also teaching college algebra at Owen. “She recognized that I had a talent for math,” Marie said. “She had me stay after class to do more math exercises. She did this even though she had spent a full workday at Manassas.” Marie departed Memphis for Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois after her freshman year at Owen. She never saw Ms. Turner, a LeMoyne College alumna, again. “As a result of her working with me, I never had trouble with math,” Marie said. Marie received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in mathematics from Northwestern. In 1967, Marie earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkley. Marie's thesis is titled, " Structure of some cocycles in analysis," and is available on Google Books . Marie is among the first 15 black women in America to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. Dr. Garraway's pioneering mathematical algorithms and inventions for Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies paved the way for the modern era of telecommunications and the electronic transmission of data around the world. After college, Marie enjoyed a long and successful career at Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies. Her pioneering mathematical algorithms and inventions for Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies paved the way for the modern era of telecommunications and the electronic transmission of data around the world. Marie hopes the Juanita R. Turner Memorial Fund will bring out the "Hidden Figures" among LeMoyne-Owen's math students. Ms. Turner died on Dec. 3, 1980. She was 64. Ms. Turner's funeral program contained this endearing quote: “A teacher touches infinity; we never know where her influence stops.” Ms. Turner's influence never stopped. And, it has touched infinity, literally and figuratively. This article is dedicated to Ms. Turner and her greatness as a teacher and humanitarian. The Watkins family is forever indebted to Ms. Turner for her gift of love and caring for Marie. Marie Always Gives Back to Our Community Today, Marie finds enjoyment in tutoring young college-bound students and in her carrying on with her endless philanthropic work. Each one of Marie's three children has earned a doctorate degree. Additionally, medical degrees were simultaneously conferred upon two of her children, along with their Ph.D. degrees. Marie has also established and endowed scholarships at Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University’s Medical School, and Johns Hopkins Medical School in honor of our brother, Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. In Alabama, Marie has established a scholarship fund at Alabama State University in honor of our father. Dr. Levi Watkins, Sr., was president of ASU from 1962 to 1981. The pursuit of educational excellence has been a core Watkins family value since our ancestors were emancipated from slavery in 1865. The Watkins family is proud of Marie. And, we truly appreciate all of the work she has done/is doing for our community.
