Kowtowing for No Good Purpose

For a fleeting moment this week, I thought U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions might be part of the well-meaning “resistance” group described in the anonymous New York Times op-ed essay that is keeping Donald Trump from engaging in reckless behavior as America's President. I actually believed this was the reason why Sessions has kowtowed to Trump’s non-stop, embarrassing, abuse and humiliation of him.

Trump has labeled Sessions a “traitor”, a “retard”, an “idiot”, and much worse. Trump has repeatedly stated that he can’t stand Sessions’ profound Southern accent. The President also thinks Sessions’ Alabama-based educational background is inferior to Ivy League schools. Finally, Trump views Sessions as "weak" and "dumb".

Yesterday, Sessions denied that he is a member of the “resistance” group within the Trump Administration. With his denial, Sessions made it clear that he has willingly subjected himself to Trump’s gratuitous denigration of him as a human being for no good purpose.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., my childhood pastor in Montgomery, Alabama, always told us: "Don't let anybody take your manhood." This is exactly what Trump has done to Sessions. And, for reasons no one understands, Sessions has allowed him to do it.

Will Sessions ever regain his "manhood" in Trump's world? I don't think so.

What do you think?
